about this blog

You’re reading about Karen Karbiener’s pedagogical adventures from August through December, 2009.  A Whitman scholar at NYU, Karen is on a Fulbright this fall in Novi Sad, Serbia.  Karen will be working on a literary biography of her family, ethnic Germans with centuries of Vojvodina roots who were placed in death camps and forced labor camps in postwar Yugoslavia.  She’ll also be  teaching a Master’s seminar entitled “Walt Whitman: The Global Perspective” at the University of Novi Sad.  She’s thrilled to bring Whitman’s art and message to her new students, and curious about how these new environs will affect the way she teaches Whitman as a “poet of place.”
